LI: To give a presentation on the Ancient Greek Olympics

Last week, LS2 gave presentations to the class about what we know on the Ancient Greek Olympics. For this task, my group used Prezi to present and recorded a Screencastify to present to the class. Prezi is a good way to keep your audience entertained by animating the different areas of your slideshow.

We talked about what the Ancient Greek Olympics was and what took place on the five days of the Olympics. We also gave 5 fun facts about the Ancient Olympics.

I enjoyed this because it was fun to present and learn about the Ancient Greek Olympics as well. One fun fact that I learnt about the Ancient Greek Olympics was that one athlete trained by lifting a bull calf everyday until it was a full grown bull.

LI: To research about Violet Walrond

 

This week for reading we were learning about Violet Walrond and how she became a New Zealand competitive swimmer attending the Olympics. Her coach was her dad, he supported her through out the whole journey.

This week PBS celebrated book week, we did this by completing tasks related to reading and books. On friday PBS attended the book week assembly, this was an interesting assembly as this is my first book week, I was one of the cameramen for the assembly.

My Reading Pathway

LI: To show my personal journey through books

                          

This week is book week at Panmure Bridge School, which means every class participates in a number of reading activities. One of our activities was to create a reading pathway that shows how my favourite books have changed over time. At the moment I like reading One Piece because I like the story line and the anime. Its about a boy who wants to be King of the Pirates. He goes on sailing and meets a swordsman who wants to be the best in the world.

Polynesian Panthers

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

                       

We read the article “Shameful stain on NZ’s history”, an article about New Zealand’s History on the racial discrimination on the Pasifika community. Our provocation was “Should the Government of today apologise for the dawn raids of yesterday?”. 

In order to respond to this provocation we needed to evaluate the text by looking deeply at both perspectives. A perspective is point of view, or the opinion of one side. When exploring both sides of this provocation, we formed our personal opinions based on the information we read, and the information we already knew. In our DLO we have shared our different perspectives and have made an informed collaborative response to the question we were asked. We all agree that an apology is owed. It is important that this happens. What we didn’t agree on was who should give the apology. Our current government was not the party who organised the dawn raids. The party who are historically responsible should be the ones to step up and show remorse.

Sir Isaac Newton

LI: To learn about Sir Isaac Newton
 

                         

This week in Reading, LS2 has been working towards Simple Machines. Apart of this, we were required to learn about Isaac Newton. Isaac Newton is a physicist, mathematician, theologian and a Astronomer. We were also required to create a DLO with the following questions: Why is his work important? What did he find out? How does his work connect to simple machines? I found this interesting because I havent been educated about Sir Isaac Newton. I found this fun because we made a presentation as a group.

Marc - C.A.R.E

LI: To create a blogpost on someone who has a positive attitude despite difficulties they have faced.

I am researching Marc, Marc is someone who never gives up and has faith in reading. Marc taught me and the rest of the school the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life. Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times. Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts. I found the words Marc said interesting as I've never heard them before. 

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life. Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times. Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts. I found the words that Marc said interesting because I've never heard them before.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi Summary

LI: To learn in fewer words what the text is about

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a settlement between the Maori and British. This settlement happened when Captain Cook arrived and told the British Empire about New Zealand. When the Britain arrived to New Zealand they had planned to add New Zealand to their empire. The New Zealand chiefs weren't so eager but since they needed protection from the pakeha they agreed to a treaty that would guarantee protection and peace.

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport

 LI: To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

                          

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation, ‘Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that information to help us form an opinion that we could justify with evidence. I personally think that we should make masks mandatory as it keeps us safe and with prevent another lock down happening.

Crimean War

LI: To learn about the charge of the light brigade

                         

                         

In groups of three we created a DLO about Crimean War, we mostly focused on "The Charge of the Light Brigade". We learnt about when the Crimean war took place, where it was fought. The war was fought in Crimea, Peninsula, Russia. The charge of the light brigade was a task force that followed out a false order that lead them to their death. We also used the poem made by Alfred Lord Tennyson to give us a visualization of what might of happened. The story made by Alfred Lord Tennyson is about how the light brigade was ambushed by Russian soldiers. I found interesting they used horses as transport.

Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot

To understand why we celebrate Guy Fawkes each year LS2 buddies up with the juniors. We recorded all the important words from the story Mrs Anderson shared with us on a piece of paper. We then chose the 20 most important words and from those words chose 6 words to help us write our summary. The embed above is what Aarush, Aaliyah and I created.

Law of Inertia

LI: To strengthen your understanding to forces, gravity and inertia

            

This week for reading we have been learning about Inertia, the part of science that describes the changes by force, or either being still in rest. Due to force. There are three laws of inertia which are Inertia of Direction, Inertia of Rest and Inertia of Motion. We created a DLO about what Inertia is, and the rules of it. We thought this was really interesting, because we thought it was all just gravity, but there’s more. 

Biology (Footprint Observations)

LI: To look for evidence in the data/an image and infer what might be happening

This week for science, we were learning about observations. An observation is the action of observing or watching the behaviour of something. We decided to try to guess what happened by reading pictures, or trying to guess what happened by looking at the pictures. We had three different observations to guess. The first one had big prints, and little prints next to each other. We thought and guessed that it was a mother and it's baby. The second one had two different prints, crossing over each other, and the all going around in a circle. We thought they were fighting, or making a home. We finished and all agreed it was a fight, because only the big tracks were coming out, and not the little ones. The last one had the same except they both went into a circle, but didn't leave. We thought they both hurt themselves, or made a house, because the tracks didn't leave, but instead stayed there. We all agreed again, that they stayed the night there, and made a house. this activity was fun.

Duffy Books at school!

Today we received our duffy books! Every term we get chances to pick duffy books. This term i chose two books, the first book is called Star Wars: Jedi Academy, Attack of the Furball. I chose this book because i have read the other books and i want to continue the books. The second book is called, Tom Gates: Spectacular school trip. We get to choose 4 books just in case 2 of them dont come. We'd like to say thank you to duffy for these books!

This week for writing, reading and inquiry we created a timeline of important events in Vincent Van Goghs life. Vincent Van Gogh is famous for painting the 'Starry Night'. His net worth is $1 Million - $5 Million! What would you do with that much money?

Stephen Hawking | Physics

LI: To use smart searching skills to find out about a scientist from the past who made an important contribution to their field of science.

For distance learning we kept our reading and writing learning going making DLOs to present our work. My first DLO was about Stephen Hawking who contributed to the Physics side of science. Stephen Hawking decided to search for new things in outer space. Cosmology is related to the field of study in astronomy/evolution of the universe.

Science | Summary

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about

This week for our reading topic (science), we created a summary using the information from our post it notes. In our summary, we skimmed and scanned to find the important keywords. We also shared our ideas and collaborated to create our summary. For our next activity, we used a question dice to help us create three interesting questions that we wanted to research. We all worked together in these activities.

The three most interesting questions are:

• When was science discovered? 

• Why is science important?

• How is science different from the past to today?
